Immortality beneath the Veil
Immortality is not measured by the years one lives, but by the wisdom one leaves behind.
Overview
The Duskborn exist between life and death, sustained by blood and the supernatural curse carried within it. They are not defined as monsters or heroes by lineage; centuries of existence only magnify the consequences of who they choose to become.
Ageless after the Embrace, Duskborn possess supernatural strength, speed, regeneration, heightened senses, and Blood Sense. Hunger, sunlight, fire, severe trauma, and the Beast ensure that immortality is never invulnerability.

Hunger and the Beast
Hunger, fear, rage, and desperation strengthen the Beast. Survival belongs to those who master it without pretending it is gone.
The primary nourishment. Careful feeding and willing arrangements protect both life and the Veil.
May delay starvation but provides poor nourishment and cannot sustain a Duskborn indefinitely.
Each lineage affects the curse differently. Ridgeborn blood is violently incompatible and potentially fatal.
Temporarily eases Hunger but risks dependency. Sharing vitae carries profound trust and danger.
Feeding progression
Duskborn hunger advances through meaningful in-character roleplay sessions. Time spent offline, away from Opaline, or managing real-world responsibilities never advances hunger.
The character has fed during roleplay and has completed fewer than two meaningful roleplay sessions without feeding.
Sessions since feeding: 0–1
After two meaningful roleplay sessions without feeding, the Beast becomes more noticeable and hunger may begin influencing relevant scenes.
Sessions since feeding: 2–3
After four meaningful roleplay sessions without feeding, hunger becomes a serious concern. Weakness, bloodlust, and difficulty maintaining control may affect relevant actions.
Sessions since feeding: 4+
Feeding from a consenting player character or an appropriately roleplayed living NPC returns the character to Fed and resets the session count to zero.
Feeding cannot be claimed retroactively after a roll or contested scene has already been declared.
A qualifying session is a continuous in-character scene, organized event, or substantial roleplay interaction in which the character actively participates.
One continuous scene counts as one session. Brief interruptions, out-of-character breaks, or moving between locations during the same scene do not create additional sessions.
Logging in briefly, checking messages, talking out of character, adjusting an avatar, visiting the region without roleplaying, or spending time offline does not advance hunger.
The purpose is to support meaningful feeding roleplay without penalizing players for their real-world availability.
A Duskborn may feed from another player's living character when that player consents and the scene respects the Blood Code, the Veil, and established character boundaries.
Consent to one feeding does not grant permission for future feeding or additional consequences.
A Duskborn may feed from an appropriately roleplayed living NPC, including during a solo roleplay scene. Another player does not need to be present.
NPC feeding must follow Opaline's NPC policies, remain consistent with the setting, and respect the Blood Code and the Veil.
Duskborn players are responsible for keeping their current feeding status and the number of meaningful roleplay sessions since their last feeding visible in their Second Life Picks.
Update the entry after each qualifying session or feeding scene. Feeding status must be current before it is relied upon during a roll or contested scene.
Feeding Status: FED
Sessions Since Feeding: 1
Routine feeding does not require a submitted or graded roleplay scene unless the scene would otherwise qualify for submission.
Hunger and feeding are managed through trust. Players are expected to roleplay feeding honestly, track meaningful sessions in good faith, and update their character information responsibly.
Routine feeding does not require screenshots, witnesses, mandatory scene submissions, or Staff verification unless another established rule applies.
This system exists to support character development and believable consequences, not to police player schedules or create unnecessary administrative work.
Staff may address clear abuse, dishonesty, or disputes, but ordinary feeding and hunger tracking remain the player's responsibility.
Second Life Time determines mechanical time of day and natural light conditions. Viewer settings, personal environment settings, and the region's visual appearance do not change whether the rules consider it day or night.
Duskborn weaknesses are based on meaningful exposure to natural daylight, not merely the existence of daytime. Direct sunlight becomes most dangerous around the brightest part of the Second Life Time day.
Mechanical modifiers are defined by the Roll Reference.
Generations
Generation measures lineage, not character quality. Age, judgment, experience, and service still determine respect.
Legend whose continued existence remains unconfirmed.
Beings preserved only in myth and fragmented records.
Rare survivors, many believed dormant or quietly advising Cabals.
Respected elders, scholars, Voivodes, and ancient nobles.
Experienced Duskborn who often lead courts and domains.
Most recently Embraced, fully capable of earning standing.
The Cabal
Local domains govern themselves through service, responsibility, and the Old Customs—not age alone.
Governs local Duskborn affairs and represents the lineage upon the Concord.
Administers the domain and governs in the Voivode's absence.
Keeps records, manages affairs, and counsels the Voivode.
A Duskborn accepted under the Blood Code.
Bears full responsibility for an approved Fledgling until Presentation.
Learns restraint, the Blood Code, the Veil, and the customs of the domain.
HospitalityPresent yourself when remaining in a domain beyond twenty-four hours.
The VeilEvery Duskborn must protect the lineage from public exposure.
The EmbraceNo progeny may be created without approval of the local Cabal.
The BloodNo Duskborn may destroy another without lawful sanction.
Advancement
Power depends upon blood, control, circumstance, and roleplay. Influence never eliminates another player's agency.
Ranked Abilities have a maximum Rank of 3. When more than one Ability could apply to an action, use only the single most relevant Ability. Ability Ranks do not stack.
Low level
The senses, movement, recovery, and predatory instincts common to a developing Duskborn.Hear, smell, and perceive beyond mortal limits. Overwhelming sound, scent, or light can become a liability.
See clearly in natural darkness, but not through magical darkness or solid obstruction.
Notice fear, injury, exhaustion, and weakness without reading thoughts or hidden intentions.
Heal minor injuries unnaturally quickly; fire, sunlight, and severe trauma interfere.
Move silently and precisely through darkness without becoming invisible.
Recognize living blood, fresh injury, and the unnatural stillness of another Duskborn.
Assume an approved small nocturnal form for travel, scouting, or escape—not combat.
Nocturnal animals recognize a fellow predator and are less fearful, but cannot be commanded.
Medium level
Greater command of the blood, body, presence, and experience accumulated across long nights.Influence a willing or vulnerable person through eye contact. It cannot compel self-harm or violate deeply held beliefs.
Move with a brief burst of supernatural quickness.
Temporarily perform feats beyond mortal strength while sufficiently blood-fed.
Taste fresh blood to receive vague emotional impressions, never detailed memories.
Remain functional through punishment that would cripple a mortal without negating serious wounds.
Sense nearby or recent death without learning the victim or cause.
Move with exceptional balance and precision without gaining a direct combat bonus.
Invite instinctive formality through cultivated presence, never forced respect or obedience.
Draw upon centuries of perspective and history without becoming omniscient.
High level
Potent expressions of vitae, will, transformation, and immortal discipline.Impose one brief command upon a weakened or willing mind; personality and memories cannot be permanently rewritten.
Spend recently consumed blood for a short physical surge, followed by significant weakness.
Survive extraordinary conventional trauma without protection from fire, bodily destruction, or prolonged sunlight.
Become exceptionally difficult to notice in darkness while careful or still—not truly invisible.
Hide outward bloodlust briefly without removing Hunger or the need to feed.
Use approved nocturnal form or living mist for infiltration, travel, or escape; neither form permits combat.
Maintain a composed appearance through distress without preventing injury or emotional consequence.
Reveal predatory nature to provoke hesitation or fear, never obedience.
Sanctify an oath between willing participants. It cannot compel obedience or force truth.
Bonds of trust
Neither role is ownership. Both depend upon willing participation and Cabal protection.
Extended household
Protected donors
Noctis Sanctorum
The Voivode conducts official business here. Duskborn and recognized Vessels may enter; combat is forbidden and severely punished.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, but mortal food provides little nourishment. Only blood truly sustains them.
No. The curse leaves Duskborn sterile, though they remain capable of intimacy.
They may breathe and maintain a very slow heartbeat, but do not require air and can stop breathing for extended periods.
Yes. Duskborn retain emotion and may shed ordinary tears.
Alcohol itself has little effect. Feeding from an intoxicated or drugged mortal can temporarily transmit those effects.
Ordinary toxins and disease rarely matter, but substances specifically designed or enchanted against the Born may remain dangerous.
Yes, and their lack of dependence on air lets them remain submerged far longer than a mortal.
Yes. They reflect normally and appear in photographs and video.
Hunger advances through meaningful roleplay sessions, not real-world time. A Duskborn becomes Hungry after two qualifying sessions without feeding and Starving after four. Feeding from a willing player character or an appropriately roleplayed living NPC resets the character to Fed.
Yes. Duskborn may feed from an appropriately roleplayed living NPC, provided the scene follows Opaline's NPC policies, the Blood Code, and the Veil. Another player does not need to be present for an NPC feeding scene.
Yes. Players are trusted to roleplay feeding honestly, track qualifying sessions accurately, and keep their feeding status current. Routine feeding does not require screenshots, scene submissions, witnesses, or Staff approval unless another established rule applies.
No. Offline time, real-world obligations, time away from Opaline, out-of-character conversations, and brief logins do not advance hunger. A character returns in the same feeding condition they had when last played.
A meaningful session is a continuous in-character scene, event, or substantial roleplay interaction. Brief logins, out-of-character conversations, checking messages, or simply passing through the sim do not count.
No. Feeding creates occasional roleplay opportunities and should not dominate every interaction. Characters remain Fed through their first qualifying session after feeding and become Hungry only after two qualifying sessions without feeding.
There is no fixed real-world duration. Starvation develops through active roleplay, progressively weakens strength and control, and may lead toward frenzy or more serious narrative consequences if ignored.
